This was a commissioned painting by a veterinarian, who expressed a wish for a Coyote, with Native American Petroglyphs, remnants of a dwelling and pottery shards. I wanted to subtly blend these historic elements, into their surrounding natural environment, so that the more you looked the more you discovered. Painting in gouache (an opaque watercolor medium), I used a wet brush, to remove paint to create a carved effect for the petroglyph symbols on the rock. Petroglyphs found worldwide, are ancient carved images on rocks, as apposed to Pictographs, which are images drawn or painted on rocks.
