It was his expression that caught my interest in painting this wolf, that I photographed at a rehabilitation center. I wanted to create a cold, chilly environment but with a feeling of being safe and sheltered. Behavourily, he had to also be far enough out of the shelter to not be viewed as an injured wolf. I made the background up out of my head and used photo reference from Montana for plant life.
